Sa Limited Sportsman Title
Kerry posted Tuesday March 10, 2009.
The running of the South Australian Championship for Limited Sportsman was a hotly contested event at the Borderline complex on Saturday night with 18 cars taking to the grid. A large contingent of Victorian drivers travelled the highways to Mount Gambier in a bid to claim the sought after crown of SA1.
Three heats for each competitor gave the drivers ample opportunity to gain maximum points which determined their starting positions for the championship race. Defending champion Joe Aston, with a 2nd, 1st and 3rd respectively in his heats remained a hot favourite to take back to back titles. HA8 Peter Walters again dominated his round of heats with two wins and a second, placing him in pole position for the final. SA28 Brett Horton had no luck on the night and was forced to withdraw without finishing his first heat. Ben Jeffrey driving the SA9 car of Scott Allen, showed good form with a win and two seconds in his heats giving him position 2 for the championship race.
16 cars took to the grid for the 25 lap final. Lap 2 saw Joe Aston’s vehicle towed to the infield with a bent axle, leaving his title dreams squashed for this season. On the restart, Peter Walters showed his dominance and lead the field until 13 to go with another race stoppage caused by BD14 Adam Greenwood spinning out in turn 2. On the restart the front runners got a good lead on the remainder of the field. A solid performance by Peter Walters saw him first over the line followed by Ben Jeffrey, Craig Ansell third and Mark McDonald fourth.
